Forest inventory is an important component of the countrys entire forest inventory complex. It is a set of actions to assess the state of the forest, its quality and quantity. In Kyrgyzstan, for the first time, the National Forest Inventory was conducted in 2008 with the support of FAO, as a result of which more than 277 thousand hectares of forests that are not included in the State Forest Fund were identified.
On May 30 of this year, the official launch of the second National Forest Inventory of the Kyrgyz Republic took place as part of the ILEE project. The workshop was attended by SAEPF leaders and specialists, representatives of ministries and departments, the scientific community, development partners and other interested parties. The results of the first forest inventory, the methodology, the scope of work and the timing of the second National Forest Inventory were presented at the workshop.
Experts noted that this year the study will use new elements, in particular, the use of new methods of sensing and interpreting satellite images and other information received, in-depth analysis and calculation of data, integration of inventory results into the Forest Management Information System and more.
“The national forest inventory is an important element of sustainable state management in the field of conservation, protection, reproduction, rational use of forests, biodiversity conservation, the basis for the development of national forest policy, maintaining and enhancing the role of forests of Kyrgyzstan to protect the environment. Also, forest inventory is a key component for monitoring quantitative and qualitative forest changes and providing information for the needs of state bodies, local communities, the private sector and civil society in timely, reliable and relevant information on the state and dynamics of forests, ”the director emphasized SAEPF Abdykalyk Rustamov.
During the second forest inventory, forest data will be assessed on pre-selected sample areas throughout Kyrgyzstan, as well as data analysis on administrative regions, forest types, forest affiliations. Additional cartographic information about forests throughout the forest area will be obtained from remote sensing data and existing available cartographic materials.
The Second National Forest Inventory will provide complete information on vegetation cover, will allow you to create a full-fledged map of forest types, an assessment of the dynamics of the changes that have occurred in comparison with the data from the previous study.
