Impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the national forest inventory of Kyrgyzstan

On March 18, the first cases of coronavirus were officially registered in Kyrgyzstan, after which the government-imposed quarantine and restrictions on many activities. The pandemic has also been a major test for the forest inventory project. However, the team (SAEPF, GUKLOU, TTFI and UNIQUE-CAREC) reacted quickly and found good solutions to keep the project running.

First of all, the coronavirus affected the timely start of some field work related tasks and some of the planned activities were postponed. However, the entire team switched to an online format of work, and also conducted a series of trainings using an e-learning platform and video-conference system, which required processing and repackaging of content. By this training and capacity building was made possible.

Affected was the start of the field work. After a period of one month where we checked the work performance, it was decided to increase the number of field teams from 12 to 14 in order to ensure that the field work can be completed by the end of November 2020.

Another measure necessary was to provide all teams with masks, antiseptics and instructed how to work in compliance with the rules of social distancing and hygiene.

Despite all the difficulties, it was – with support and efforts of all partners – possible to adjust the work plan without significant changes in the timing of the project.
